The Gardens on Havana is a shopping center located in Aurora. Originally built in 1971 as Buckingham Square Mall, the property experienced a steady decline in occupancy during the 1990s, which led to the closure of many of its stores. The mall was demolished between 2007 and 2008 and later redeveloped into an outdoor lifestyle center, reopening in 2009. Major tenants currently include Target, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Kohl's.Buckingham Square Mall was developed by Sherman Dreiseszun and officially opened on August 5, 1971. The mall originally featured major anchor stores such as Joslins and Montgomery Ward, along with a Safeway supermarket, a Woolworth variety store, and local retailers including Fashion Bar and Dave Cook Sporting Goods. At its peak, the mall offered more than 828,346 square feet (76,955.9 m²) of retail space and housed over 110 stores.Despite its early success, the mall experienced declining tenancy throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Safeway, Woolworth, Fashion Bar, Dave Cook Sporting Goods, and Montgomery Ward eventually closed. In 1998, the Joslins chain was acquired by Dillard's, and a Mervyn's store was later added to the mall.In 2004, Miller Weingarten Realty LLC purchased the property and announced plans to transform the aging enclosed mall into a lifestyle center featuring outdoor streetscapes and mixed-use development. By that time, the former Montgomery Ward building had already been replaced with a Target store, while both Dillard’s and Mervyn’s closed in 2006.Demolition of the original mall began on January 8, 2008. The existing Target store remained in place while the rest of the site was rebuilt with entirely new structures. The redeveloped shopping center officially reopened in 2009. Today, major tenants include Kohl’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Petco, Ross Dress for Less, Sprouts Farmers Market, Target, and Office Depot. The Gardens on Havana now contains more than 496,647 square feet (46,140.0 m²) of retail space and is owned by AmCap Incorporated.
